Tucked among rolling hills or along babbling brooks you’ll find them. They are nestled in tiny towns and stand proud beside abandoned steel mills.
They are our houses of worship – structures whose grandeur often belies their surroundings.
Domes & Spires is an endeavor to capture the aesthetic appeal found in these wonderful treasures.
This book was inspired by a tour of the churches in the Cambria City section of Johnstown. Amid these pages, the staff of The Tribune-Democrat and Johnstown Magazine hope to highlight the beauty found in those churches, as well as many other magnificent structures.
The beautiful images in this book were captured by newspaper photographers, Todd Berkey, John Rucosky and David Lloyd; magazine photographer Jacob Koestler; and Johnstown resident and amateur photographer Ken Warner.
The churches featured were chosen from nearly 150 nominations submitted by readers and narrowed down by a panel of community leaders. At the time of this publication, several of the structures that appear in these pages are slated to be closed. Their future remains uncertain.
